On September 30, 2004, the Steering Committee for the
Austin High School Class of 1949 including Bob
Tieman, Joe Miles, V. B. (Taylor) Walker, and B. Ann (Becker) Ballanfonte
went to Austin High School and presented a portable defibrillator valued at
$2,055. The defibrillator and a plaque
commemorating the gift will hang on the wall
in the school Administration Office. AHS Principal
Barbara Spelman and Athletic Trainer Stephanie Keiningham were on hand to
receive the gift. Both expressed their sincere appreciation for this life
saving equipment and noted that the Administrative Staff is fully trained in
its use.
In another
generous move, the Steering Committee of the Class of 1949 met with Amy Allen,
Donor Relations Director for the Austin Community Foundation, and donated
$5000 to the permanent fund managed by the Foundation. Interest from this
fund is used each year to provide scholarships to meritorious graduating
seniors as selected by the Scholarship Committee at Austin High School. The
Class of 1949 also donated an additional $292.69 to be used for a scholarship
in spring 2005. These donations were made from funds collected for the 55th
Reunion of the Class of 1949. Steering Committee Chair V. B. Walker said,
“Our endowment is open to additional contributions, memorials, and other
gifts, and we hope that the principal will grow with future gifts”. The
Austin Community Foundation address is P.O. Box 5159, Austin, Texas 78763,
Telephone: 512/472-4483.
