Benefiting the Hispanic Scholarship Fund,
Richard Lord in association with Browning
Boxing put together an exciting and entertaining card for Austin boxing fans
on Friday night. Each bout featured one of Lord's fighters. He has said
he always tries to book competitive opponents as was certainly the case here.
The Main Event featured Austin's Johnny Casas vs. Nelson
Alexander of Ft. Worth, TX in a scheduled 8 round Super Lightweight
match. From the beginning Casas used his powerful left hook to work the
right cheek of Alexander. By the end of 7 rounds, an ugly cut had developed on
Alexander's right cheek and his right eye was swollen shut. Dr.
Jerry Baugh ruled Alexander unable to continue and Casas was declared winner
by TKO. Results of other bouts on the card are:
Delia Gonzalez of El Paso defeated Jay Vega of
Austin by unanimous decision in a very competitive 6 round flyweight bout.
Jason JJ Watters of Austin KO'd Ronald Cobbs
of Waxahachie, TX one minute into the 2nd round of a scheduled 6 round light
heavyweight bout.
Ilia Tcharikov of Austin defeated Jorge Garcia of
Alice, TX when Garcia threw in the towel after 2 rounds of a scheduled 4
round super middleweight bout.
Gloria Ramirez of El Paso defeated Linda Tenberg of
Austin by a split decision in a hard fought 4 round super bantumweight bout
that could have gone either way.
In rarely featured exhibition boxing, Austin's own flyweight
Anissa Zamarron took on Isabel Manyseng and Maribel Zurita,
both of San Antonio, in 2 consecutive 2-round bouts. Compared to last
year, Zurita is a much improved boxer, and she gave Zamarron all she could
handle.
